The Louisiana Retired Teachers Association (LRTA) has awarded the “The Gold,” a Unit Challenge Award, to the local Monroe branch, Ouachita Retired Teachers Association (ORTA) at the state meeting in Bossier recently. Governor Jon Bel Edwards was the keynote speaker and indicated his appreciation for all teachers and recognized needed improvements in education.
President, Norene Smith, accepted for the association, saying, “every retired teacher is a winner!” Under her leadership the local unit has expanded services and met thirty of the thirty-one 2018 challenges as outlined at the state level. Then, added, that “Our merit is built on years of dedication from others, I have just been steering the boat.” Smith, however, has been responsible for several innovated ideas—the most gratifying, she says is the associations new scholarship fund begun annually for an education student at University of Louisiana at Monroe.
Aside from perodic contributitions the membership can (and does) dedicate their donations in memorandum of a loved one.
Rodney Watson, Executive Director, (LRTA) Baton Rouge, will be the upcoming guest speaker for the local club. In his delightful and informative manner, sprinkled jesting and showmanship, Watson explains what’s happening behind-the-scenes, politically speaking, as it pertains to the welfare of teachers, particularly retired teachers.
All educators are invited to attend: Both Parish and City System, Community College and University retirees. A non-educator can support the organization and or the scholarship fund by becoming a friend or an associate for a nominal membership fee per year.
ORTA wishes to thank the Council on Aging of Monroe and Vantage Insurance Company for support in hosting this special guest speaker on Monday, February 4, 2019, at Carolyn Strauss Senior Center, 2407 Ferrand, Monroe, at 2 pm.
Besides the speaker’s in-the-know information, there will be refreshments and door prizes. For more information, call Norene Smith, President, 318-325-7681 or Beth Wofford, Historian, 318-805-3658.
