Surrender to God’s will and his way

Scripture Reading…And he arose that night and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of Jabbok…Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day. Now when he saw that he did not prevail against him, he touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint as he wrestled with him. And he said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.”

But he said, “I will not let You go unless you bless me!” So he said to him, “What is your name?” he said, “Jacob.” And he said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

Then Jacob asked, saying, “Tell me your name, I pray.” And he said, “Why is it that you ask about my name?” And he blessed him there.
So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: “For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.” Just as he crossed over Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip (Genesis 32: 23-31 (NKJV).

My Christian Friends,

In the noted biblical account, God is wrestling with Jacob all night long, and Jacob appears to be winning. The question to ponder is how is Jacob wrestling with the almighty, powerful God and it appears he is prevailing(superior in strength) over Him until God cripples him? Well, he wrestles with God in his own fleshly strength. In order to understand the struggle, one must make a note of Jacob’s trickery ways. He tricked his twin brother Esau and left his home when Esau threatened to kill him. He tricked his uncle Laban, and now that God has told him to return to his home, Canaan, he is up to his same conniving ways (Read Genesis 25-32).

In order to get Jacob to surrender to God’s way and not his way, God wrestles with him and eventually had to break him. As a result, Jacob (trickster) demands a blessing from God, and God honors the request. God blesses him and changes his name to Israel, which means God rules. Jacob did not gain the victory because he struggled with the appearance of prevailing against God but because he surrendered to God.

Is God wrestling with you due to your unwillingness to yield to his way? If so, surrender to His will, His way, and be blessed.

Let us pray:
Lord, please transform lives and renew minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.
