It’s been 40 years since the old Monroe City Dump, located adjacent to a well-populated area off Grammont, was closed by the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA said the dumpsite was a health risk and unsafe.
However, last week residents were surprised to see huge piles of debris and a fire burning on the old dumpsite, even as new homes are being constructed 800 feet away.
Until the early 1980s, all of the city’s garbage, trash, and storm debris was dumped on a massive landfill in South Monroe, adjacent to, and surrounded by poor black tenants who lived in shotgun houses.
